  President: Sean Connolly

Sean is a Certified Safety Professional with 17 years of field and corporate management experience in occupational safety and health. He graduated with a BS in Occupational Safety and Hygiene Management from Millersville University and has also earned his MS in Environmental Health from Temple University. He is currently employed as the Global EHS Operations Leader for FMC Corporation in the Agricultural Solutions business group.

Sean has worked in manufacturing, chemicals and nuclear power. He has extensive experience in a variety of occupational safety and health fields such as process safety management, industrial hygiene, fire protection, risk management, ergonomics, training, hazardous waste management and many others. In addition to FMC Corporation, Sean has worked for Betz Dearborn, Stonhard, Inc., ATOFINA Chemicals (now called Arkema, Inc.), PSEG Nuclear and GAF Materials Corporation.

Sean has been a member of the Philadelphia chapters of both the ASSE and AIHA since 1998.

Sean lives in Richboro, PA with wife Denise and daughters Kate and Erin.


  President-Elect: Richard Horan

Richard Horan, M.S., CSP, is a Health and Safety Specialist for PPL Electric Utilities, Allentown, PA, and is a current member of ASSE. With 15 years' experience as a safety professional, Rich worked effectively with various employers to control losses, and prevent injuries, illnesses, and vehicle accidents.

Rich began his career at PECO Energy, where he worked for 32 years in a variety of roles in Generation plants, including two nuclear sites, and with Electric and Gas distribution organizations. Rich also worked for Aramark, a Professional Services Company based in Philadelphia, supporting the Healthcare Line of Business for Safety and Risk Control. Rich holds a M.S. in Safety Sciences from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. in Organizational Dynamics from Immaculata University.

Rich is a current a member of the West Chester Exchange Club, a service organization supporting community service.


  Vice-President: Pat Karol

Pat Karol began his work in the safety field as a front-line supervisor, with safety as collateral duty, and now involves advising senior leaders on strategies to reduce risk.  His experience includes 20 years in the corporate safety departments of two Fortune 500 companies and the Federal government.  Pat holds certifications as a Certified Safety Professional and as an Associate in Risk Management.

Pat currently works for ARAMARK Corporation's Safety & Risk Control Department, with primary responsibilities including working with senior leadership to develop strategies and tactics to reduce risk of injury, environmental exposure and foodborne illnesses.  He also spent two years as a safety and health consultant to the Transportation Security Administration, where he managed a team responsible for safety and health compliance at all US airports in the Southeast region.  Prior to that, Pat spent thirteen years with Delta Airlines' Corporate Safety Department, with primary responsibilities including investigation of serious accidents, development of procedures and training, identification of trends and development of mitigation strategies, and assisting with VPP applications.

 

Pat is an accomplished speaker, and has spoken on safety and heath at regional and national conferences, including the American Industrial Hygiene Conference, National Sherriff's Association and Georgia SHE conferences. 

 

Pat has been a member of the Philadelphia Chapter ASSE since 2008, and was also a member of the ASSE Georgia Chapter in Atlanta for 10 years prior to relocating to the Philadelphia area. 


  Past President: John Myers

John Myers has more than 12 years’ experience in Environmental Health and Safety who has successfully applied innovative solutions for injury prevention in office, manufacturing, distribution center and pilot plant settings. He is skilled at inspecting and assessing workspaces/construction sites for safety hazards and recommending and implementing safe workspace/construction policies. John served as site expert on fall protection, confined space, lockout/tag out, and hazardous work procedures, and conducted safety hazard and pre start-up safety reviews.  He also provided assessments/solutions for office, manufacturing, laboratory, warehouse, distribution centers and sales fleet.

He enjoys working with people at all professional levels and with people from diverse backgrounds.

He loves playing golf and taking pictures.


  Treasurer: Joe Dutko

Joe has worked for Modern Group Limited for more than 25 years. Modern is a diverse material handling company with 24 locations covering NJ, Eastern PA, DE & MD. In 1991, Joe took the assignment of becoming Moderns first Safety Director and implemented a broad spectrum of programs to insure the company's compliance with existing rules and employee safety. Having studied at Penn State and at the National Safety Council, he received his Advance Safety Certificate in 1994. In 1997 he expanded his technical specialties in D.O.T. compliance, combining all 4 Modern operating companies' programs into one. Joe has been a member of ASSE since 1998. He has been an active member in the ASSE in attending seminars in Baltimore, Orlando, Atlantic City and other events. He became active in the Philadelphia Chapter in 1999, and joined the Executive Board as Treasurer-elect for 2001-02.

Joe resides in Burlington City, NJ and is kept busy restoring an 1880 period 3-story brick house. His son Matthew, an accomplished house finish carpenter, is glad to help with some of the more difficult work. Major outdoor activities include; whitewater rafting (the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon was the best so far), exploring the canyons of the West and traveling to name a few.


  Secretary: Tom Case

Tom Case is an private occupational safety and health consultant. Prior to going into consulting, Tom served as corporate safety, health and environmental manager for an international manufacturer and distributor of food products, and as a senior health and safety specialist for an international building products manufacturer.

Tom received his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering Technology, and his Master of Science degree in Occupational Safety and Health, from Temple University. He has over 25 years of occupational safety and health experience in consulting, industry and academia.

He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Certified Safety Professional.

Tom has been a member of the Philadelphia Chapter ASSE since 1993. He is also an officer of the Philadelphia Section AIHA, currently serving as the section's Secretary and Webmaster. Tom lives in Royersford, PA.


  Delegate: John Connolly

John is the Safety Professional for the Sheet Metal Contractors Association of Philadelphia and Vicinity. The Association Offices are in Conshohocken and the Membership we serve is based in Southeastern PA, Western NJ, and Delaware. John has over 20 years experience in Association Management and extensive experience in construction related activities.

AS part of the SMCA team, his duties include safety services and training for the Members and staff liaison to the Associations operating committees. He is a graduate of Kutztown University with a B.S. in Education.

An ASSE Member since 2000, John participated in the National Professional Development Conferences every year since 2002, plus the Philadelphia Chapter PDCs. John served as President of the Philadelphia Chapter in 2005-06, and as Vice-President and Secretary in the preceding years. He is an authorized OSHA Construction and General Industry Instructor, certified fork truck instructor and Red Cross CPR/ AED/ First Aid Instructor. Professional Memberships also include the Middle Atlantic Society of Association Executives (MASAE) and the Mid-Atlantic Construction Safety Council (MACSC). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of MASAE.

In 2009 he attained the ASAE’s highest professional designation, CAE, Certified Association Executive.

John resides, with wife Deborah, outside of Sinking Spring (PA). He has one son, Brian, and has become an “empty-nester”. A bad, infrequent golfer, John enjoys the quiet times fishing local streams, reading and travelling.


  Delegate: Hoyt Emmons

Hoyt Emmons has over 25 year of experience as an EHS and Security professional and is currently a consultant working with Med-Tex Services and Industrial Risk Control.  He has supported the Philadelphia ASSE chapter by volunteering time and serving in leadership roles for many years, including serving as president of our chapter.  This year Hoyt was honored to present two workshops at the Pennsylvania Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health Conference on the topic of ergonomics. 

Hoyt’s education includes a BS in Animal Husbandry, a MBA in Management, and a MS in Environmental Health.
